Separate shared moments

Those moments which were once shared in the company of others — those moments that serve as markers through the years, maybe half a dozen times in a year, of laughter or pain or awe — are now "shared" by way of a cell phone conversation, email or text and somehow are supposed to carry the same impact.

   They do not.

As relationships are pushed by geographic relocation, changing lifestyles, altered working patterns, so too, has the fabric of those relationships been strained, disconnected. It seems ethearal, soulless technology is is somehow supposed to fill that gap of being there and we have fooled ourselves into thinking so.

Like the bulk of the crowd at a concert (or Obama's inauguration) holding up their cell phones to take pictures of the event and then send them to friends. It only goes so far; it's only a thrill on the front end. It is a fraudulent "shared moment," but it is certainly sold to us by the phone companies under the guise of "making connections."
