| If you're out after midnight ... |
But for the unfortunates living, injured and dying in the Denver area it was the return of a nightmare.
And sadly I fear it's just going to get worse.
After being glued to the television from early Friday morning until late afternoon, to Monday's disturbing visage of the alleged diabolical loon, one could think the only rational action of a concerned society would be to lock up all males under the age of 26 with a clean police record in the event they are psychopathic killers.
There are just so many things wrong with what happened in Aurora that I don't know where to begin.
How can one person amass such an arsenal?
Well, when you buy weapons in this country, all you have to do is shop around and, should you have a checkered past, lie to the gun dealer about your background.
Or simply go to a gun show.
Need lots and lots of ammo?
Buy it online; FedEx, UPS or the Postal Service will deliver.
But don't just blame those who are in the gun business. It appears the only person (so far) who thought there was something wrong with this kid was the operator of a gun range who rebuffed James Eagen Holmes' request to shoot there because the kid struck him as crazy.
The victims, and all who know and love them, are indeed innocent, especially the 6-year-old girl.
But I have to ask — What responsible adult allows their offspring under the age of 18 to be out after midnight? What responsible adult allows their child under the age of 13 to see a PG-13 movie that they know is extremely loud and stunningly violent? Apparently one mother was settling in to watch The Dark Knight Rises with a three-month-old baby in tow.
Now I know the previous paragraph was pretty tough to take in light of what happened just after midnight Friday, but it's part of the incomprehension that I (and maybe others) continue to sort through in the aftermath of what a good boy from an excellent neighborhood with outstanding academic achievement is capable of executing.
Gun advocates will rightly say that sick people will use any means to kill others (remember the Oklahoma City bombing) but there is no freaking way anyone but the military should be able to buy assault rifles.
Let me rephrase that — there's no freaking way anyone but the military should have access to munitions for assault rifles.
You can own the gun but you can't buy the bullets.
Target practice, my ass.
In closing, let's get the genuine, heartfelt take from our friends in Hollywood. Consider this quote from a Reuters news report:
"The cable news networks were wall-to-wall with the shooting, so it had some shock value that will keep people away," former Columbia Pictures marketing chief Peter Sealey said. "But it will be short-term. This movie will play for five or six weeks and still do great business."
Yeah, this whole thing is great for business.
