Cue the schmaltz

What does it mean when all of the most watched shows are reruns on cable?

Is it the desire to go back to a simpler, sunnier time — something pre-911, something pre-"reality," something other than the current economic collapse.

Comfort TV to go along with the comfort food.

Like bums huddled near a barrel fire scraping together some vile vittles, we stay home (it costs too much to go out) eating pasta while lost in Seinfeld, or Friends or Frazier or MASH or (for some) Golden Girls.

Good Times, no doubt, to get us through some grim days ahead.

As always some singing nun or sappy songstress is sure to emerge amid the meltdown with some saccharin warbling to go along with the sad scene.
