It took me a few years before this one dawned on me.
The words 'sunrise' and 'sunset' are the product of the natural narcissism that emanates from us all (at least in the Western world). This is because there is dawn and dusk, but the Sun does not rise, nor set — it remains fixed (at least in our universe).
But we are such a smart bunch that, over time, the perception emerged that we on Earth were at the center of the Universe and everything revolved around us — even the Sun, since it would 'come around' and see us everyday and tell us when to get up and when to go to bed. How nice.
Except the Sun does not "come up" in the east and then "go down" in the west; it is the turning Earth that bows (literally) to the east allowing us the life-giving benefits of the Sun. The Sun doesn't move, but we have the perception that it does, a perception hammered home each day, every day through ubiquitous, erroneous weather forecasts.
One of my goals is to be able to sit still enough and relax thoroughly enough to feel the Earth rotating.
Maybe I should try it at dawn or dusk for the best effect.
