Certainly in my Top 3 candidates for the Anti-Christ, we have Milwaukee native Allan Huber "Bud" Selig the itchy, inept Commissioner of Major League Baseball who previously owned his hometown Brewers franchise.
After throwing the preceding commissioner under the bus in 1992, the cabal of team owners ceded control of the league to Mr. Selig on a de facto basis for six years before deciding — oh, well, gee whiz, there oughta be a real commissioner so things don't look so slimy — to make Bud the Real Commissioner.
Mr. Selig has indeed made all his former/current franchise owners rich through collusion; he's disappointed us all with the 1994 strike and the ensuing cancellation of the World Freaking Series; turned his head as steroids flourished and real records were broken by pumped-up poseurs; allowed an All-Star Game to finish in a tie; and — my favorite — attempted to argue that his previously owned Brewers (which he gave to his daughter in '98) would not benefit financially from the league's [his] bid to evaporate the neighboring Minnesota Twins franchise.
"St. Louis is closer to Minneapolis than Milwaukee is," he splained.
Um, no, St. Louis to Minneapolis is 464 miles, as the crow flies, whereas Milwaukee to Minneapolis is 295 miles.
Part of that mess led to Mr. Selig and another of his ilk (Montreal Expos owner Jeffrey Loria) being charged with racketeering and conspiring to deliberately defraud the Expos' minority owners. [the case was settled out of court (wink, wink)]
So, I have my reasons for thinking this man has done more to ruin the greatest game on Earth and thus be qualified for the above-mentioned Most Infamous List (which includes Bill Gates, btw).
In any event, what makes this tirade so timely is that the consistently competitive, small market, brilliantly run (top to bottom) Minnesota Twins are once again on the cusp of a playoff berth.
Oh, what rapture would shine should the Twins (payroll: $67+ million) get to play and slay the New York Yankees (payroll: $208+ million) en route to the World Series. It would be so great to see this little team that was the target of a money-grubbing stomp job serve up old man Selig [and his craven cravin' cronies] some uninvited warm and steamy shiesse.
