Like buying gas-guzzlers.
Even as I watch $3 gas arrive with more resignation than surprise, comes a report saying SUVs are back in style, baby.
During the past few weeks I've been thinking that it's criminal that there aren't more vehicles that get 35 mgp: we know Venezuela and the Arabs and the Russians despotically drive the oil markets — why don't we want to fight back?
As 2010 came to an end, sales stats show midsize sport-utility vehicles jumped 41 percent as compared to 2009. The group included the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Honda Pilot – both get about 18 miles per gallon. That's just pathetic.
Sales of small cars remained flat.
"You have about 5 percent of the market that is green and committed to fuel efficiency. But the other 95 percent will give up an extra 5 mpg in fuel economy for a better cup holder," said Mike Jackson [to The Washington Post], the chief executive of AutoNation, the largest auto retailer in the country.
That pretty much sums it up.
I've also had this half-baked theory for quite some time that as the price of gas goes up people who drive these monstrous gas-guzzlers become more angry and drive more aggressively, thus getting even worse gas mileage thus having to buy more gasoline and on, and on, and on.
Maybe it's not such a half-baked theory.
