| And I gave up a testicle for this? |
But this past week we saw the decline of a pair of sports icons — one who had admitted to taking steroids in his career, the other, bitterly defiant to the end.
Each one had been at the top of their sport and rewarded handsomely for the dominance of their play and of their "ya know, I could be doing something else" swagger.
Tiger Woods had it for years until he stepped on his crank and certainly Lance Armstrong and Alex Rodriguez remember it, but this week was a brutal comeuppance for Lance and A-Rod.
The testimony of his inner circle makes the Armstrong case all the more sordid. Not only did Armstrong take performance enhancing drugs, he reeled his teammates (and their wives) into the years-long deception.
But he's now done. Done fighting the allegations of doping, hoping the mound of evidence and testimony won't become public. Too late. He's just given the French another reason to hate US.
And A-Rod and the Tankees? Words cannot describe my elation at their deflation.
When Derek Jeter went down the team fell completely apart with A-Rod leading the collapse.
And Yankee fans, true to their fashion, booed the most overpaid team in history before sending the Bronx Bummers into a deeper funk and a colossally pathetic showing against Detroit.
Here's some salt for the Yankee wounds: The team has one championship since 2000 at a price of nearly $2 billion. Hardly cost-effective.
The New York/New Jersey diehards are likely going to be screaming to dump the 37-year-old Rodriguez who was 0-for-19 with 13 strikeouts against right-handed pitching this postseason especially since Rodriguez is STILL OWED $114 million at this point.
Maybe he'll use some of that cash to find a new 'doctor' to help pick up his game.
