Competent or not, those individuals whose names begin with letters at the 'top' of the alphabet — A , B and {not so much} C, reap rewards which are many times unworthy.
Let's say you need a doctor, but don't know where to start. Well, the AMA {a monolithic cabal if there ever was one} frowns on physicians advertising, so you're left mostly with a list of providers that your insurance will allow you to choose.
And how is that list organized?
Alphabetically, of course. [note debut entry of this blog]
Hence, whether the physician is any good or not; whether said healer graduated at the top or bottom of his class; whether he is tuned in to his patients' needs or perpetually detached from his purported "practice" — an Applebaum will always precede a White or a Stevenson or a Hurst or a Goodman or a DeBakey or even a Barnard [for Christ's sake], simply because his or her name starts with an A and is thus granted {let's be real} a totally unfair advantage.
Any "objective" list of any type will be arranged this way, irrespective of performance or aptitude.
Prejudice comes in many forms, many of them obvious and reprehensible, others quiet and more ingrained — such as The Great Alphabet Fraud {which no doubt was hatched by Adam or some other Alpha male}.
So next time you need a doctor, a lawyer or a sandwich, choose an Einstein, a Lincoln or a Turkey on rye.
